When Josefina first visited the clinic in 2023, she was overwhelmed by a cascade of health challenges—uncontrolled diabetes, persistent joint pain, difficulty breathing, constant fatigue, and the heavy burden of anxiety and depression. But then she met Dr. Weitzman, and something began to shift. Dr. Weitzman crafted a care plan that went beyond medication, guiding her toward healthier food choices, regular exercise, and consistent follow-ups. As Josefina adopted these changes, her health improved, and she regained her energy and hope. Today, Josefina is grateful to be part of the GBCHC community, where dignity, trust, and person-centered care are at the heart of everything.

Carlos heard about the Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic from family members who have used the Clinic before. He is unable to afford insurance but says, “It feels like I have insurance when I’m here. I really needed help during the pandemic, and the Clinic was here for me.” During a routine physical, Dr. Weitzman, the Medical Director at the Gary Burnstein Clinic, ran an EKG test and immediately insisted Carlos go directly to the nearest emergency room. Carlos was admitted and in the hospital for a full week for a serious heart condition. “I started coming in for checkups because of a history of cancer in my family. I had no idea I had a heart problem!” explains Carlos. He feels the Gary Burnstein Clinic and Dr. Weitzman saved his life that day. “I value the Clinic very much. It is an excellent place, I feel great coming here.”

When Linzie Potts became Volunteer Manager at the Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic, she aimed to make a lasting impact—not only in patient care but in cultivating a compassionate workforce. Before her, the program had just 75 volunteers, limited training, and struggled with consistency. In just a short period of time, she transformed it, growing the team to 300 dedicated volunteers in 2023 through orientation, professional development, and mentorship.
One of those volunteers was Chioma, a medical student at Ross University. She aspires to be a pediatrician and started volunteering during her clinical rotations. Initially a scribe, she soon found her passion in community outreach. Her experiences have been transformative, fueling her commitment to GBCHC’s mission of providing free, high-quality care to underserved patients.
Chioma and the hundreds of other volunteers allow GBCHC to serve thousands of patients every year. This would not be possible without a critical donation from Mr. and Mrs. Horowitz. “They are the root and catalyst for all of our growth,” Linzie says, highlighting their generosity, which facilitated rapid and sustainable expansion. Today, GBCHC is more than just a healthcare clinic providing exceptional, patient-centered care; it’s also a place where volunteers can gain valuable experience, give back, and be inspired to make a difference.

The Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic helps our community thrive by removing barriers and increasing access to quality care. Our mission is to ensure that no one goes without the care they need due to financial constraints.
