The Detroit News is bringing back its eighth annual Holiday Cheer for Charity competition to give $20,000 to a local nonprofit of readers’ choice.
Readers can cast their votes for any of 11 participating charities at this link during the competition’s first round starting at noon on Friday.
The nonprofits are:
Underdog Rescue Ranch: This organization is a foster-based dog rescue that offers safe haven and adoption events for homeless, neglected and abused Metro Detroit dogs.
Oxford Kids Foundation: OKF provides access to therapies not covered by insurance for children with disabilities, traumatic injuries and chronic illnesses.
Covenant House Detroit: This organization provides resources for 18- to 24-year-olds experiencing homelessness from food, housing and clinical and behavioral health resources to educational and recreation opportunities.
Common Ground: This crisis support service operates Michigan’s Suicide and Crisis Access Lifeline and offers 24/7 support online, via phone, text and chat services and in person. Common Ground also assists communities after mass violence events and offers behavioral health urgent care.
Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic: GBCHC provides free dental, medical, optometry and pharmacy services to uninsured and underinsured Michigan residents between ages 18 and 64.
Mosaic Youth Theater: This creative development program offers arts training, mentorship and college and career support for Detroit area youth.
Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries: This faith-based nonprofit offers substance abuse disorder treatment, veteran programs, community outreach, education, training and more than 5,000 daily meals and 2,500 shelter spots for people experiencing homelessness.
Mothering Justice: This grassroots group advocates for and offers resources to mothers of color in the U.S.
Keep Growing Detroit: This food sovereignty organization operates a farm along the Dequindre Cut Greenway and offers fresh, sustainably grown produce from Detroit at Eastern Market.
Atlantic Impact: This nonprofit offers college readiness and trades careers workforce development programs for Detroiters.
Paint a Miracle: This art studio offers visual art instruction and exhibition opportunities for adults and children living with disabilities.
Here are the official 2024 Holiday Cheer for Charity rules:
Each individual person can cast one vote per person per day online at detroitnews.com/cheer2024 during the competition’s first round, which starts at noon Friday and runs until noon on Nov. 22.
The top five nonprofits with the most votes by the end of the first round will move on to the final one.
The final round will run from noon on Dec. 4 until Dec. 18 at 11:59 p.m.
During the final round, voters can send monetary donations of at least $10 through FundRazr.com to the non-profit of their choice. Each organization will get to keep any amount they raise during this round.
The nonprofit with the highest donations raised to the dollar will then win a grand prize of $20,000 from The News.
Last year’s Cheer for Charity campaign raised $26,050 for five top charities after readers cast more than 8,000 votes for 14 charities at the start of the competition. The Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance collected the grand prize after receiving $12,750 in donations through the 2023 competition.
