I am thrilled to introduce you to Michigan’s largest volunteer-driven free clinic.
Our clinic was founded on the philosophy of Dr. Gary Burnstein: “Everyone has the right to great healthcare, regardless of their ability to pay.” For more than 20 years, this belief has guided us.
Here, patients find hope and healing through our dedicated volunteers, who provide medical, dental, vision, pharmacy, and specialty services—all at no cost. Every corner of the GBCHC reflects compassion in action, whether you are a patient seeking care, a volunteer offering your skills, or a partner helping us sustain this mission. You are part of the GBCHC family.
Our mission is simple and powerful: we help our community thrive by removing barriers and increasing access to quality care.
On behalf of our staff, board, and volunteers, welcome. In every day and in every patient, we serve, Dr. Burnstein’s vision lives on.

Onward and upward,
Chief Executive Officer
Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic
As the CEO of the Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic (GBCHC), Michigan’s largest volunteer-driven free clinic, Mary Lewis is a bold, dynamic leader who doesn’t shy away from tackling healthcare’s toughest challenges head-on. With more than 30 years in healthcare, she blends clinical know-how with no-nonsense leadership and brings the rare ability to view healthcare from every perspective—patient, provider, and leader—shaping her deep respect for the people and systems that make care possible.
Mary served as Director of Education and Campus Director at Career Quest Learning Centers, where she guided workforce development and training initiatives. She then became Clinical Team Manager at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker School of Medicine Family Practice Residency Program at the Family Health Center before serving as Practice Director of their new $15M new facility, where she also launched a U.S. Department of Labor–recognized apprenticeship program, opening doors for future healthcare professionals. These experiences positioned her as the right leader to move GBCHC into the future—strengthening teams, building systems, and driving innovation.
Mary holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology (concentration in Chemistry) from Western Michigan University and a Master of Healthcare Administration from the University of Phoenix.
She joined GBCHC in 2023 as Director of Clinic Operations, and just one year later, the board unanimously appointed her CEO—recognizing her knowledge and commitment to operational excellence, equity, collaboration, and sustainable growth.
Under her leadership, GBCHC is driving forward a powerful vision: to elevate the free clinic model as the solution to the global medical crisis. Her mission is to replicate this model across Michigan and across the nation, proving that free clinics can deliver first-class, equitable, and dignified care at scale.
